Help those in need from the Oklahoma tornado
A collection has been started for the community and families of Moore, Oklahoma where there has been a heavy loss of life because of a tornado that destroyed the town. There is a "collection bear" in the district office until the last day of school. Then the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross to be sent to the community. Let's try to fill the bear to help this community!! If you have any questions, please see Mr. Von Lehmden.
National Council on Youth Leadership
Juniors interested in being selected for NCYL (National Council on Youth Leadership) please see the nomination form and process/information necessary to be considered. Students that are chosen and participate in the September 15 and 16, 2013 activities will have the opportunity to apply for scholarships through the program. Last year we had a $100 winner and this year we have a $500 scholarship winner. If you have any further questions please contact the high school office. You can download the form here.
Looking for Preschoolers:
The 2013-2014 Preschool Registration opens March 1st. To get registered please complete the registration form that can be found on the Preschool tab of the Central City School Website. Once the registration form is filled out, please turn it in along with the tuition fee of $20 to ABC Child Care Center.
Central City Named River Town of the Year!
Central City has been named Iowa River Revival’s “River Town of the Year” on Monday, Jan. 21, 2012! Read more about this Here! Congrats to everyone that helped win this award, especially Jason Levenhagen, Courtney Bortle, Ashley Kerslake, Ingrid Martinson and Kailey Tyne. All of your efforts and input is appreciated!

Dear CCCSD parents,
We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred in Connecticut on Friday the 14th of December. We understand the extensive news coverage and the various discussions that will take place in our homes, school, and the community. to help your children cope with news such as this and to help you answer their questions. Please know that our Guidance Counselor will be available to support students in school on Monday and through the rest of the week. Please contact your child’s school with any concerns that you may have, or if you would like your child to meet with a mental health professional. Also, as the safety of our students is of the utmost priority, we will be reviewing our procedures and scheduling a preparedness drill.
A new Central City Community School District Facebook has been created!! Go to Facebook and search Central City Community Schools and "Like" our page. The page will be a good way to get reminders about upcoming events and to hear and see about the great things that are taking place at Central City Schools.

Learning With Technology
It was great to walk into a couple Elementary classrooms today and see our students actively engaged through the use of technology.
Virtual Reality
Recently, a teacher shared with me some of the work one of our students did over summer break. The video below is a quick sample of the work from Alec Dalton (10th Grade). He is a member of our Virtual Reality course (VR). Alec explains, the video sample with....I am using Blender and Google Sketch-up to create Star Wars models, mainly because their is a wide varieties of createable models. I have designed 108 models and each model takes around 2-4 days to complete.
Essentially, Alec starts with a blank screen and uses the program to help create the models. As you can see Alec understands how to use Blender and Google Sketch-Up very well. We are encouraging him to pursue an internship in this field, as it is a career that he is interested in.

Activity Passes
Central City is once again selling activity passes for both students and adults at a discounted rate of paying for every contest. Prices and terms of use are as follows:
Student: $50Parent (adult)/ Individual: $75Family: $175 (pass is good for all immediate members of family) Pass will admit holder into any regular season Central City sporting event. This includes Football, Volleyball, Wrestling, Basketball, Track, Baseball and Softball. This also includes any Central City held tournament. It excludes any conference tournaments/ events, post-season events, and music and theatre events. Passes may not be exchanged amongst holders. Any misuse of a pass will result in forfeiture of the pass.

New Central City Commercial On Education
As part of the efforts of City Council/Main Street you can find the first in a series of commercials that will be shown on KCRG. The commercials celebrate Central City. The first commercial is about the Education opportunities at Central City Schools.

Central City Preschool
If you have a child that is three or four years of age by September 15, 2012 and you are interested in registering your child for preschool, then Central City Preschool is your perfect choice. You may register your child anytime now. Registration materials are found under the preschool tab and at ABC Child Care Center. to get your child registered you must drop off your completed form and fee at ABC. If you have further questions you can find more information under the preschool tab or contact Mrs. V at 438-1710.
Student Enrollment
We recently completed our student enrollment count and for the 3rd year in a row we have an increase in enrollment. It is encouraging to see more students enroll in our school. I believe we have excellent staff, programming, and opportunities for our students. I believe people are recognizing the efforts of our school district, and are choosing to take advantage of the opportunities that we provide.
Robotics
Central City Schools is happy to announce that today we were awarded 3 different grants from the Stem Scale-Up Programs that are part of the Governor's Stem Advisory Council, an advisory council that Mr. Craig Martinson serves on. The nearly $10,000 will help us to continue to provide and extend some excellent programming choices for our students. A big "Thanks" to Ms. Litterer, Ms. Calhoun, and Mrs. Bortle for their efforts in submitting grants on behalf of our students. The 3 grants cover the following programs: 1) First Lego League 2) First Tech Challenge and 3) Corridor Stem Initiative--Engineering is Elementary.
Kirkwood Community College
We continue to take advantage of our partnership with Kirkwood Community College by sending students to the Jones Regional Academy. CCCSD is strongly behind our students in helping prepare them for College and/or a Career. The school district not only pays for the tuition and the books, but we provide transportation to and from the site. The opportunities of Jones Regional are excellent, and it encouraging that 32 students chose to take advantage of the opportunities. As a result, we will have some students who are better prepared to go into the world of work or who are closer to earning their associates degree. We will also have students who through their hard work and dedication that will end their high school careers with 30-40 college credits. I am proud of the work that our students have put in, and know that this is just the tip of the iceberg. I believe our students will be prepared to compete with anyone in the competitive work force.
Greenhouse
We continue to make progress on the Greenhouse that has been erected as part of our Agriculture program. Through the generosity of local citizens we are able to construct a building that will give our students exposure to growing plants, running a business, Aquaculture, Hydroponics, and much more. Soon, we will have live, green plants to sell!
